favorite places to shop - online(ebay for designer/brands/rare and etsy for vintage/independent designers), goodwill and a handful of other thriftstores. i also lust after things on other sites like oaknyc, ssence or opening ceremony. but often enough i find their vintage/independently handmade cousins :)

here are my favorite looks from 2011...

as i was going through last years posts i realized that i didn't really do that many outfit posts and that most of them don't really convey how i dress on an everyday basis... i guess i find flannel, skinnies, tee and sneaks or boots unworthy.... hmmmm. kind of odd as i obviously love wearing some kind of version of that almost everyday. well, anyhow... i think it's kind of weird to post favorites of personal looks, but it was fun to go through last year and interesting to see what i find post worthy. i also realized i've sold a lot of the things i've worn on the blog... so to go with the theme of 'so fresh and so clean clean' i'm definitely gonna try to only buy things that i love and not on a whim (which i thought i was already doin haha). but i will say that i still have all the things worn in these looks :) the first is definitely my fav... maybe it is because i was at the tim burton exhibit. it was such a magical day. that is definitely part of what fashion is about for me... feeling more me and therefore adventurous. in a world that pressures us in so many ways... it is refreshing that something as little as feeling comfortable in being the unique human that you are is so gratifying.

to a great new year and future posts of me lying around in my favorite flannels :)

so fresh and so clean clean is my new years theme...

i find what you do & who you are with kinda prophetic for the year... so i always try and hang with my most beloved peeps. i didn't even realize it, but i guess this goes for my satorial choices as well. this hudson tee arrived at my door yesterday and although it isn't something i would have ever bought for myself, i love it. the soft natural color, the simple and comfy cut... it's pretty much perfect. i have to admit i got the stylemint mystery bag hoping to get the $1,000 target giftcard. i was pretty torn... i wanted to wait for the new styles to drop before i used my credit, but i decided to take the chance... although i didn't get the giftcard i am pleasantly surprised that i like the tee it came with. and starting the year with a pleasant surprise sounds a lot better to me than starting it with a hangover..

so this is my everyday makeup or we can call it non makeup routine. it is very simple. line the outer edges of the eyes in a matte reddish/plum brown eyeshadow (about mid point of eye to the outer edge on top and bottom. i tend to start closer to the center on the bottom and wing out just a tad on top). mac matte eyeshadow in corduroy is very close to what i'm using... sorry i can't read the label on mine anymore. a touch of rosy blush on the apples of your cheeks. i'm using the top right color in this coastal scents contour palette. brush my non manicured eyebrows with bare escentuals brow finishing gel... i love this stuff. i use it everyday, my favorite beauty product for sure. well except for what i use on my lips... vaseline :) yep, that's it. four products. simple. fresh. clean.

so this was my first stylemint tee and i've since collected three more... soooo soft.... and the price is right. i am a tee kind of grrl and am on a constant treasure hunt for tee perfection. i think i wear one almost everyday. reallyreally (insert shrek voice here). most of my favs come from thriftstores because of how worn in they are and stylemint tees somehow feel like you've owned them for years... my kind of tee.

this sweater is one of my best scores off etsy.... it is heavy and cotton! yes cotton... what a concept huh? it seems to be so hard to find cotton knits these days... i don't get it. ohhh and the superhero-ness of this sweater puts it up there in the ranks... warm cozy and doubles as a cape? yeah! it helps inspire the crazy scenarios that go through my head as i walk down the street. yes, i am walking through a comic book or sometimes an alter universe... it really just depends on the day.

okey dokey.... soooo i haven't found THE jeans yet... it's just so hard to spend that much on jeans and not be sure (since i mostly shop online).... so i got the rag & bone hat instead :-/

i'm so excited.... i love the holidays. the crisp air, the cozy sweaters, busting out all my vintage coats that i've been collecting all year, wrapping presents, getting creative in the kitchen, driving home late from family gatherings, falling asleep in front of the fire... and the list goes on...

realistically i end up in a 'fancier' version of my everyday jean look to family events. add high heel boots, vintage coat and red lips. but i think i may change my ways a bit. if i could i would totally rock the outfit above... i might switch the blue shoes for the black version just to get more for my buck, but i think the blue adds a nice festive touch. both the dress and shoes are pretty affordable... the same doesn't go for the accessories which could easily be replaced with something easier on the wallet :) it's really all about the dress though... i'm just dying over high necks lately...

soooo, i wear black skinnies EVERYDAY.... does anyone have any good recommendations? i like the between jean and legging thing and they have to be pretty good quality because i wear them so much... hope you guys can help...

i have been cleaning out my lil apartment and took me ole clothes to sell at a few shops, but ended up trading instead. yes, exactly what i wasn't going to do. these pants came from a trade at the painted bird... awesome lil vintage shop in silverlake. i had been looking for some ticking jeans for quite sometime... and voila there they were waiting for me ankle zippers and all :)

ohhh yeah, here is something exciting...

i painted my nails yellow yesterday. i did. and i didn't rock it like karen or sandra. nope. may have something to do with how non grrly my hands and nails are. i use my hands a lot. it was hideous. hideous. oh my. so i go back to black... like right this second

so i found this jacket at salvation army for $5. yup you heard me. well, it was actually $5.99. i kinda love how easy it is. i've been wearing it like crazy. best part is it's the perfect way to wear all my pins... i collect pins you see... since i was like 14.... so i have A LOT. i haven't bought any in a while. hmmm.. i think i'm gonna have to fix that.

i have a real love/indifference to fashion... i know strange... i do have a quasi fashion/personal style blog right??? anyhow... i love fashion in the way that i love dressing up in my favorite stuff to take a walk or jump on the bed.... but sometimes i think the industry in general emphasizes the wrong aspects. i mean it's art and it's the best way to express who you are on a daily basis since you do have to wear clothing... unless you live in a nudist community :D but anyhow... my love for fashion and clothing came about in a really strange way... my mom left when i was a wee lil thang and left a lot of her clothes... i used to parade around the house in her dresses and heels... and nightgowns and long strands of fake pearls (it was the 80s). burying my muzzle in her stuff and smelling her as i cuddled in my strawberry shortcake quilt. i was a happy girl and keeping her with me in any way kept me that way. i still dress up like i'm a lil grrrl and wear what makes me happy. it's about that for me... feeling good... just like it was when i used to layer my mommys goodies...

that is basically how i got my name/blog title... i found ways to stay brave back then... and part of it was wearing what made me happy and made me me. the grrl part came from riot grrrl which was my saving grace in my high school years. so there you have it.

and don't be judgmental of all the other grrrls wandering around the planet being brave enough to be themselves. cuz well that just sucks.

sooooo... drinking coffee ♥♥♥ right now...

i had a super productive trip to the salvation army yesterday... a pair of mens levis, a ck jean jacket, 6 shirts (to cut up) and a sweater (to shred). i am a very happy grrrl. everytime i have a good haul at goodwill or salvation i always wonder why i shop anywhere else... haha... but the thing is i don't really. well, there is etsy when i am looking for something in particular(usually vintage) and ebay for newer used items. i'm kinda always inspired by 90s simplicity(think mens levis, the perfect tees, worn in henleys & boots of course), so thrifting is perfect. i just gotta keep a mental list of things i want/need and keep focused or i'll end up with a mountain of stuff that gets worn once... anyhow...

i love that guy (in the last photo)... he keeps my neighbors trash bins safe and makes me smile

the night before these photos i dreamt in blue. yes, i did and i so enjoyed it that i wanted to carry it over to my conscious state. i don't own a lot of blue, but i made do adding in greys and tans. marine vibes accomplished. i've had the ribbon for years. i think it came on a gift... i used to wear it tied around my waist over vintage dresses and slips

i'm sooo fond of the isabel marant meshness that has been making the rounds on blogs and have been stalking vintage cousins on etsy to much avail! i found this sky blue one ($11) and recently a red long tank style version ($5) that will be bleached pinkish tonight. i'm also considering bleaching this one as i don't wear that much blue... but i'm not sure yet

last wednesday i went to the "refresh your style" party hosted by Elle at Planet Salon. i had an amazing time... champagne, turn tables and great company :) my grrl tessa was modeling her new do and she looked amazing!

these photos are kind of silly... but i wanted to show you my hair. i never really do much with it.... top bun, side leia buns or messy... that about encompasses it. but since it was a "hair" party i decided to do something different. a couple off centered pigtail braids and a braid across the top/side... was fun to do something different with my nest

loving it all here....

i reconstructed this shirt out of a thrifted gap chambray shirt and i am totally loving it.... it is a combo of a couple one teaspoon shirts that i loved... racer back, oversized armholes, cropped high in back... these photos didn't catch all these details, but i'm sure i will be wearing it a lot hence more photos...

the pants are amazing... i love long johns and these stretch out all loose and comfy, but they have a wide lowrise elastic waistband that makes them more daytime wear then most long john pants... and the color goes with EVERYTHING. i wish they made them in more color ways...

the scarf and bracelets are my favorite bday presents.... the scarf makes me feel at home in a magical faerie land...

i hope everyone had a good weekend, i feel as though i could be drowning in a sea of errands if i don't start doing something other than consuming copious amounts of iced coffee and planning my next read...

i'm so glad we went to the brewery artwalk today... to be honest i wasn't really feeling it, but the bf kinda insisted in a sweet subtle way and i am SO glad we went. it was good to be out in the open enjoying the beautiful weather, local art, old buildings, cold beer and my people...

it happens twice a year, so if you are in the l.a. area you should definitely try to make it to the next one... i added a few links above for other like minded nerdy internet readers... i google anything i am (half) interested in...

i got these pants from asos... and love them! they are an early bday present from the bf.... i saw them a couple weeks ago and was afraid they'd sell out in my size. i cropped them... along with a bunch of my other pants... i'm diggin the whole ankle thing... don't you think ankles are underrated? the shirt is so old and haggard but i just can't get myself to get rid of it... today i renewed it for spring by chopping off the long sleeves.

as you can see in my face, getting out by noon doesn't agree with me....

my favorite snack... whole wheat or everything bagel with cream cheese, tomato, whatever veggies i have in the fridge(sometimes grilled), pepperoncinis and or thinly sliced red onions, sprinkled with sea salt and doused with tapatio

i love chucks...

i've been wearing them since i can remember. really a true love story. back in my jr college days i was walking home in my trusty steel toes and just couldn't make the 10mile walk so i stopped off and bought a pair of chucks. i will never forget that walk... or those shoes... they ended up with writing and holes all over them and even accompanied me to the riot grrrl convention at the late jabberjaw. eventually i wore those babies into the ground... not the only pair i've worn to bits...

these photos were taken last saturday.. had to rise kinda early(for a vampyre)... so no makeup etc... this is a very common everyday look for me as of late... hence the chucks... they always make an otherwise plain look very me... no ballet flats for this grrrl xoxo don't get me wrong i love the way ballet flats look, but i've tried and it's just not a go...

ps early means by noon... actually i lie.... it means by 1pm... and that is still an exaggeration

lately i've been bringing it back to basics and only buying and wearing what i love and feel good in... and in this case it is the princess leia buns :P... but seriously... i love cozy, soft basics. i've been searching for the perfect sweaters for what seems like forever and i finally came across two that i know i will have forever. the best part is that they didn't break the bank... i got them both from etsy. this here bobble sweater is one of them... i'll show the other sometime. i love how the sleeves are super long and the neck kinda just funnels. weird, but perfectly me. i love odd things.

i am feeling sooooo off today...

since last time...

~i finally got a dslr!!! yup, a canon rebel... this photo wasn't taken with it (it was actually taken weeks ago)... i haven't even taken it out of the box.... but hopefully i will have time to play with it tonight

~like i said this photo is a little old... almost irrelevant to my current simple tendencies... i've become enamored by anything simple, classic, with painstaking quality...

~i joined a gym... what the? but i have been going quite a bit and i feel so good... and i want to start taking their yoga classes...

~i've become even more addicted to coffee... yet again... *not implying that i ever stopped, but the amounts have increased... haha

~i haven't gone to the thriftstore! i think this is a result from cleaning my closet and not believing how much stuff i got rid of

this dress is one of my favorite etsy purchases to date. it is soo soft and fits like a dream.... check out the tarantula sisters for more amazing vintage. i really recommend scouring etsy for vintage... there are lots of high priced shops(with AMAZING pieces), but if you take the time you can find lots of shops with a style niche and decent prices. i mostly shop at goodwill and salvation army, but there are times when i am looking for something in particular and etsy has delivered... right now i have my eye on quite a few pieces and hopefully some of them will be mine soon :) gotta finish my christmas shopping first though :P

i went to see the black swan this weekend! it was unbelievable... a true fairytale... well, my kind of fairytale... very dark, but deep and beautiful as well...

these were taken the same day as the last post, but i wanted to show you the coat and sweater in their full glory so i split it into two posts.... here is the coat story... i got it on ebay for $10.49.... with shipping it was under $24! but that isn't the best part.... i was searching all kinds of randomness on ebay one day.... including faux fur jackets, and this baby popped up.... low and behold i was feasting my eyes on a jacket that i owned years ago and sold because i needed to eat. the lining was falling apart in mine, but this one came to me brand new with the original price tag still stapled on. yes, stapled... it is that old. i was wearing my original jacket when i quit my first waitressing job.... walking down the street with a check in my hand and the rain hitting my face.... it was liberating! it is amazing how my new one brought back some of those memories... including how it felt to sell my stuff...

it's like a sign, someone is telling me i'm doing good by giving me this little gift back...

juices and a smoothie from flore... yummmmmmmmmmm. i am addicted to fresh juice... i juice at home most of the time, but sometimes i can't help but going to one of my favorite juice spots

yes, i finally got the elizabeth & james knuckle ring! i've been wanting this ring for sooooo long.... when it went on sale last week (on shopbop) i was ecstatic till i realized they were sold out in my size.... and then one magically appeared in stock and i nabbed it! wanting something for so long makes it so much sweeter when you actually get it ♥ thanks honey

sometimes the best thing to do is just throw a hat on... actually that is more often than not for me... so when i was contacted by 1001fedora and had a look at their hats it was a no brainer. my favorite has to be this wool striped fedora... it would give my lazy day(i mean everyday) looks just what they need. how great would it look with a simple maxi and chunky cardi? i also love this brown woven one since almost all my hats are black! but what i really had in mind was a hat for the boy... i'll be starting my christmas shopping soon and i think this classic black woven one might be on list
